Older Travellers in Bali — Coordination That Accounts for Age

If this is life-threatening, call 112 (national emergency) or 119 (medical emergency / ambulance) first. 112 is the national emergency number in Indonesia; 119 is the public health emergency line (PSC 119) for ambulance and medical dispatch. Make that call before you contact us. Once help is moving, message the desk and we take over the coordination around it.

With an older traveller the clinical picture is not ours to assess, but the logistics change in ways worth planning for: insurance that may exclude pre-existing conditions, a longer medication list, mobility that affects transport, and a destination choice where a second transfer is more costly. We coordinate; licensed practitioners provide the care.

Read the insurance before the flight

This is the single most valuable thing on this page. Policies for older travellers frequently exclude pre-existing conditions, cap cover by age, require a medical declaration, or price differently once a condition is declared. None of that is discoverable usefully at a hospital counter in Denpasar. Read it before departure, declare honestly, and keep the policy with its assistance number somewhere reachable by whoever is travelling with them.

Write the medication list properly

Not from memory, and not as “a blood pressure tablet and something for the heart”. Copy the names and doses exactly from the packets, note what each is for if you know, and add allergies, previous reactions and any recent operation or procedure. Bring enough medication for the trip plus a margin, in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription. Any clinician who attends will ask for all of this, and getting it right removes a real source of risk that has nothing to do with our work or theirs.

Mobility changes the transport question

For a patient who cannot walk far, cannot sit upright comfortably, or uses a wheelchair, the vehicle and the route matter more than the distance. Many properties in Bali have steps, narrow paths and gates that a wheelchair does not pass. Airport transit with limited mobility takes considerably longer than a well passenger expects, particularly at peak departure hours. We plan for these rather than discovering them at the gate.

Destination choice matters more

For any patient, arriving somewhere that has to send you on is costly. For an older patient it is worse, because the move itself is harder on them. That raises the value of confirming, by phone and in Indonesian, that a facility can actually receive this case now — the relevant department available, imaging working, a bed — rather than heading for the nearest option and hoping.

Where to stay, if there is a choice

Genuinely worth thinking about in advance for a traveller with a known condition. The larger facilities cluster around Denpasar, and Sanur sits close to them; the further from that area you stay, the longer every journey becomes, and remoter parts of the island narrow the realistic options considerably. This is a planning consideration, not medical advice.

What we coordinate

A practitioner to attend where travelling is the harder option; a destination confirmed as able to receive the case; transport matched to mobility; interpreting at the counter; admission and deposit formalities; insurer correspondence including the guarantee-of-payment letter direct settlement usually needs; keeping family abroad informed across time zones; and the documentation a home insurer will want afterwards.

The boundary

We do not assess frailty, fitness to travel, medication or any clinical question. We do not employ doctors, nurses or paramedics, we do not operate ambulances, and we hold no affiliation with any facility. Every clinical judgement belongs to the licensed practitioner attending the patient.

We publish a directory of listed facilities that carries its source and the date each entry was checked, and we withhold any direct line that has not passed two independent sources. Capability still changes by the hour, so while a case is live we confirm by phone, in Bahasa Indonesia, instead of relying on what a page said yesterday.

What changes with age is also covered in children, pregnancy and older travellers, and what a family has to handle once someone is admitted in admitted in Bali.

Travel with a written summary

One page, in English: conditions, medication with doses copied from packets, allergies, previous reactions, recent procedures, and the name and number of the usual doctor at home. Carry it, and give a copy to whoever is travelling with them. For an older traveller this single page does more to improve the quality of any assessment here than anything else a family can prepare.

Sanur Emergency is an independent medical concierge. We are not a clinic, hospital or ambulance operator, we do not employ medical staff, and we are not affiliated with any medical facility. All clinical care is delivered by licensed providers.
